Is it Time to Clean your Chimney!

10/5/2016 (Permalink)

October is here, which means it’s time to clean your chimneys. Chimney cleaning is imperative to a home’s overall comfort and air quality. The temperatures are beginning to mellow, leaves are falling and soon enough, our pipes will be freezing and winter will be upon us. Chimney’s need cleaning at least once a year- more often if you are using your chimney more than the average household. October is a perfect time to start a fire and begin your cozy winter months.

Knowing when your chimney needs cleaning is easy to spot. Scrape some soot off of the chimney wall- if the soot looks to be more than 1/8 of an inch thick, it’s time to start cleaning! If you are a new homeowner or have recently moved and this is your first time cleaning your chimney, be sure to check for other red flags such as critters or damage to the chimney itself- such as lack of flashing or improper tuck pointing. Using a chimney brush, goggles, broom, and dustman, you can begin the cleaning process. Be sure to clean from the top-down, unless you have another helper, in which case you may begin from the bottom-up. Once you are finished cleaning, be sure to pick up or vacuum any leftover debris. Finally, your chimney is ready for those cozy winter nights!
